BAYVILLE POINTS OF INTEREST

Daniel Whitehead lived in Oyster Bay and purchased land from the Matinecock Indians; this area was known as Oak Neck and Pine Island and named Bayville in 1859. Asparagus raising began on the land divided into lots among 23 men.  An Indian campsite was discovered in Bayville in 1974 with skeleton remains dating to 1555.

The first school was constructed in 1851 on Merritt Lane and the Methodist Church was located just west of the school. The first drawbridge connected Bayville to Mill Neck.  Transportation by water taxi operated between Bayville and Oyster Bay and ferry service operated between Bayville and Stamford, Connecticut.

A casino was build at Oak Neck Beach in 1913 bringing people to this summer community with popular beaches.  Known as “The Oyster Company”, founded in 1887, the firm of Frank M. Flower & Sons, Inc. was the only industry in Bayville. The company is the grower of the famous Pine Island Oyster.

The Bayville bridge was completely reconstructed in 1991, ninety-three years since the first bridge was built.  If Robert Moses constructed a bridge across Long Island Sound,  the Village of Bayville would have been divided and would not have remained the quaint community it is today.
